Oil rises as Russian gas cut to Europe may encourage switching to crude

Oil rose on Monday on expectations Russia’s reduction in natural gas supply to Europe could encourage a switch to crude, though concerns over weakening fuel demand because of an expected increase in U.S. interest rates limited gains.

SGX Nifty signals a negative start

Nifty futures on the Singapore Exchange traded 37.5 points, or 0.23 per cent, lower at 16,581, signaling that Dalal Street was headed for a negative start on Tuesday.

Tokyo stocks open higher in cautious trade

Tokyo’s key Nikkei index zigzagged between positive and negative territory at the open on Tuesday, with investors cautious ahead of a key Federal Reserve decision The benchmark Nikkei 225 index edged up 0.01 percent, or 3.58 points, to 27,702.83 in early trade, while the broader Topix index inched up 0.09 percent, or 1.82 points, to 1,945.03.

Wall Street ends choppy session nearly flat

The S&P 500 see-sawed on Monday and ended close to unchanged as investors girded for an expected rate hike at a Federal Reserve meeting this week and earnings from several large-cap growth companies. The Nasdaq ended lower, and S&P 500 technology and consumer discretionary led declines among major S&P sectors. The energy sector gained along with oil prices.

Rupee rises by 12 paise to close at 79.78 against US dollar

The rupee rose by 12 paise to close at 79.78 against the US dollar on Monday due to a weak dollar in overseas markets and an improved appetite for riskier assets.

Sensex, Nifty on Monday

The 30-share pack Sensex dropped 306 points to close at 55,766.22. Its broader peer, Nifty50, slipped below the 16,650 mark. RIL closed 3 per cent lower, contributing 252 points to the Sensex fall.
